The Language of Others (2017) is an expanded cinema and installation work that explores metaphors of what exists between people—and between one world and another. Even when sharing a common language and vocabulary, we may question whether true understanding has taken place, or whether communication is ever fully achieved. In the seamless flow of interaction, there are elements that elude verbal explanation. Each person lives by their own set of rules, shaped over time, forming a world of their own.

The narrative unfolds through two beings—one using spoken (or written) language, and the other using bodily gestures. Their conversation, though somewhat theatrical, reflects the drama of communication itself. Trapped within separate monitors, they begin to communicate in their own respective languages. Between the origin and the destination of language, infinite interpretations emerge. This ambiguity and multiplicity of meaning ultimately create distance between self and other. Sound and visual movements are scattered throughout the installation space, evoking the countless possibilities that lie within language—and beyond it.

< 타인의 언어 >는 사람과 사람 사이에, 그리고 하나의 세계와 또 다른 세계 사이에 존재하는 것들에 대한 은유적 표현을 담은 다채널 영상극이자 설치 작업이다. 가령 두 사람이 대화를 할 때에 같은 나라 언어, 같은 단어를 쓴다고 해도 상대의 이야기를 온전히 받아들였는지, 서로가 진정한 소통을 하고 있는 것인지 의문을 품을 수 있다. 경계없는 흐름 속에 말로서는 설명되지 않는 것이 존재한다. 각자가 가진 규칙들, 살아가면서 구축된 본인만의 세계들이 존재한다. 소통에 대한 것을 조금 극적으로 표현하기 위해 문자언어와 몸짓언어를 쓰는 두 존재의 대화가 서사로 구성되었다. 두 화자는 프레임으로 상징되는 모니터를 오가며 비춰지고 이어 각자의 언어로 소통이 시작된다. 언어의 출발과 도착 사이에는 무수한 해석이 난무한다. 불명확하여 해석이 달라지는 것은 상대와 나를 가른다. 소리와 시각적 움직임은 설치 공간에 흩어지고 언어에 관한 무수한 해석의 가능성에 대해서 이야기한다.
