Ahyong Lee explores the possibilities of composition in the tension between intention and chance, structure and deconstruction.
Her multimedia installation works are composed of fragmented media elements—emerging from narrative imagination and conceptual inquiry—and are arranged in relation to space. In recent years, she has expanded her practice beyond video to include drawing, print, object-based works, and spatial installations. Through these media, she treats combinations of objects and images as materials for storytelling and as sites where narrative may emerge.
Whether beginning with a planned structure or an intuitive gesture, her work gravitates toward a consistent inquiry: how can the juxtaposition of disparate elements give rise to a narrative?
When seemingly unrelated things unexpectedly align, and dissonance reveals a curious rhythm, her work exists as a provisional story.
Lee holds a BA in Fine Art with First Class Honours from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and an MA in Cultural Mediation from the Graduate School of Communication & Arts at Yonsei University, Seoul. She lives and works in Seoul.
