In a darkened space, a grid is drawn on the floor, and a performer, dressed in white canvas garments, is only allowed to move along these lines—carefully avoiding the blank spaces in between. Fragments of everyday footage, seemingly unrelated, flow continuously across the space through a projector. The performer attempts to “catch” these fleeting images with their body, responding subjectively to the shifting visual subjects. Some images settle momentarily on the performer’s form, while others disperse into the darkness. Through the effort to stay within the rules of the grid—while simultaneously trying to engage the imagery—an array of poses and gestures emerge. The performance negotiates balance in ambiguity, revealing countless possibilities that arise between constraint and deviation.
