Drifting Citron and the Villains (2020) is a moving image collage that extends from Lee’s earlier work, A Death Fantasy for the Sunrise (2018), visualising a break from the organic rules that are difficult to escape. In the earlier work, the system of nature was defined as the highest, irresistible force, and a crack was introduced into the endlessly rising and setting sun. In this piece, the image of the fruit is used as another symbol of natural circulation, continuing the same trajectory.

Must the fallen fruit grow back into a tree, or decay and return to soil? The defiant attitude against the cyclical movements of life, death, and eternity deconstructs and reconstructs natural imagery—while simultaneously imbuing the fruit, the symbol, with active power. Released from a set sequence and prescribed motion, the citron escapes the force of gravity and floats freely. This overcoming movement becomes a fantastical icon—one that relieves the sense of helplessness and obsessive repetition within the real world.

< 부유하는 시트론과 악당들, 2020 >은 2018년 작업인 < A Death Fantasy for the Sunrise(일출의 죽음에 관한 판타지) >의 연장선에 있는 무빙이미지 콜라주 작업으로, 벗어나기 어려운 유기적 규칙으로부터의 탈피를 시각화한다. 전작에서 자연의 흐름을 항거불능의 최상위 대상으로 규정하고 무한히 뜨고 지는 해의 이미지에 균열을 가한 것과 궤를 같이하여 본작에서는 또 다른 자연 순환 상징물로서 ‘열매’ 이미지가 차용되었다.
추락한 열매는 다시 나무로 자라거나 썩어서 흙이 되어야만 할 것인가? 생과 죽음, 영원의 고리로 묶여있는 순환적 움직임에 반하고자하는 탈피적 자세는 자연적 이미지를 해체하고 재구성시키는 동시에 상징물인 열매에 능동적 동력을 부여한다. 정해진 순서와 규정된 움직임에서 해제되어 중력의 힘을 받지 않고 자유롭게 부유하는 시트론 열매의 현실 극복적인 움직임은 현실세계의 무력감과 강박을 해소시키는 판타지 아이콘으로 작용한다.
